WELCOME TO PANAMA

Panama has become a fashionable destination. It’s rich and varied culture, native fauna and flora and the diversity of landscapes and possibilities that the country offers to all types of tourists and pocket books make Panama a destination with an enormous magnetism and full of secrets to discover.

Panama City (Spanish: ciudad de Panamá) is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Panama. It has a population of 880,691, with a total metro population of 1,440,381, and is located at the Pacific entrance of the Panama Canal, in the province of Panama. The city is the political and administrative center of the country, as well as a hub for international banking and commerce. It is considered a “beta-” world city, one of three Central American cities listed in this category.

The city of Panama has an average GDP per capita of $15,300. It has a dense skyline of mostly high-rise buildings, and it is surrounded by a large belt of tropical rainforest. Panama’s Tocumen International Airport, the largest and busiest airport in Central America, offers daily flights to major international destinations. Panama was chosen as the 2003 American Capital of Culture jointly with Curitiba, Brazil. It is among the top five places for retirement in the world, according to International Living magazine.

The city of Panama was founded on August 15, 1519, by Spanish conquistador Pedro Arias Dávila. The city was the starting point for expeditions that conquered the Inca Empire in Peru. It was a stopover point on one of the most important trade routes in the history of the American continent, leading to the fairs of Nombre de Dios and Portobelo, through which passed most of the gold and silver that Spain took from the Americas.

On January 28, 1671, the city was destroyed by a fire when pirate Henry Morgan sacked and set fire to it. The city was formally re-established two years later on January 21, 1673, in a peninsula located 8 km (5 miles) from the original settlement.

The site of the previously devastated city is still in ruins and is now a popular tourist attraction known as Panama Viejo.

TRAVELING

Panama’s excellent location, in the center of the Americas, contributes to the availability of a wide range of options to reach Panama. From any city in North or South America, you can arrive at Panama in just a few hours. Additionally, there are many airlines to choose from for the trip to Panama.

Similarly, from Europe, Asia, and the rest of the world’s continents, it is extremely easy to connect to Panama.

When is the best time to visit Panama?

Any time of the year is suitable to visit Panama, since the climate is no hindrance and there is always plenty to do. The climate in the city is hot and temperatures can range from 26° C to 35° C.

All of the activities, from going to the beaches, bird watching, shopping, hiking around the mountains or spending a few days with the indigenous communities, can be done throughout the year.

You can visit Panama year-round, but a preferable time is during the dry season from December to March. The following months have intermittent rain and sunny days as part of the wet season, and November is the rainiest months.

What you can find in Panama City

The most cosmopolitan capital in Central America, Panama City is both vibrant metropolis and gateway to tropical escapes. Many worlds coexist here. Welcoming both east and west, Panama is a regional hub of trade and immigration. The resulting cultural cocktail forges a refreshing ‘anything goes’ attitude, more dynamic and fluid than its neighbors.

Unflinchingly urban, the capital rides the rails of chaos, with traffic jams, wayward taxis and casinos stacked between chic clubs and construction sites. A center of international banking and trade, the sultry skyline of shimmering glass and steel towers is reminiscent of Miami. In contrast, the peninsula of Casco Viejo has become a thriving colonial neighborhood where cobblestones link boutique hotels with underground bars and crumbled ruins with pirate lore.

Escape is never far. Day trip to sandy beaches (Pacific or Caribbean), admire the canal, or explore lush rainforests of howler monkeys, toucans and sloths.

At the tip of the southern point of Casco Viejo, this beautiful plaza pays homage to the French role in the construction of the canal. Its large stone tablets and statues are dedicated to the memory of the 22,000 workers who died trying to create the canal.
